Just a nice break from worrying about your home, energy loss, repairs, maintenance, to make time stand still. That’s what we need, a reminder of how beautiful our world is.
It’s those amazing fall colours that help us reflect on the value of our 4 seasons. People in other places, such as southern California and Florida don’t have seasons. We’re very lucky.
The colour change came fast this year. Seems just 2 weeks ago, everything was green, now the deep reds, brilliant oranges, and stunning yellows are painting quite a picture for local artists.
From Parry Sound right over to Peterborough, artists and photographers are out in full force capturing the beauty of the Muskoka, Kawartha, and Durham regions.
Why the Colour Change?
Why do the leaves change colour and become so bright? It’s a chemical change brought on by temperature changes. When temperatures drop, chlorophyll is released from the leaf.
All the bright colours are always there, however the green colour is so dense, it drowns out the other colours until fall. As Chlorophyll is released, those spectacular yellow, red, orange and brown colours shine forth to create a spectacular vista for our arty people and others who just love nature. But not for long, because the leaves will fall! Hence the word fall.
What makes Muskoka and the Haliburton, Kawartha Lakes areas so beautiful is the presence of rock formations. The region offers plenty of hill terrain, courtesy of moraine deposits from 10,000 years ago and from the Canadian Shield rock foundation.
Add the sun and blue skies, and you have an experience that’s tough to top.
If you’re looking for great drives to see the fall colours, drive up highways 11, 12, 48, or 400 for many great views. You might find boat sightseeing cruises in Midland, Gravenhurst, or Barrie. Driving the shore roads from Keswick to Sutton is a very nice fall trip.
You may like trips to Parry Sound, Huntsville auto tours, Coboconk, or Haliburton Colour Fest will give you some excellent views of fall colours. Got a full weekend? Try Algonquin Park before it’s too late.
Have fun and enjoy the fall colour display in our region.
